Welcome to STAR 1–3!
The Star 1-3 program is designed for skaters who are ready to learn higher‑level skating skills in a supportive, figure‑skating environment.
Skaters will develop jumps, spins, skills, dance elements following Skate Canada’s STAR 1–5 development pathway. To learn more about STARSkate program, visit Skate Canada’s website: https://skatecanada.ca/learn-to-skate/figure-skating/
New this year: STAR 1–3 replaces the former Pre‑STAR/STAR 1 and STAR 2/3 programs.
Eligible skaters include:
- Skaters previously in Pre‑STAR, STAR 1, or STAR 2/3
- Skaters who have passed CanSkate Stage 4
- Skaters invited by a coach
Program Delivery
- Lessons are taught in group format by certified Skate Canada coaches.
- Skaters attend a minimum of two afternoon sessions per week where they will receive a 45-minute group lesson and 15 minutes of practice time.
- A third afternoon session is also available during weekdays.
- Wednesday is mandatory. Skaters choose Monday or Thursday as their second day, or skate all three days.
- Off-ice special training classes such as jump or strength classes are currently in the planning phase and will be announced at a later date. These classes are highly recommended to all Star 1-3 level skaters.
Helmet Use at Star 1
- Helmets are optional for all skaters in the STAR 1-3 program. Skaters can wear helmets on the ice if they feel more comfortable, but it is not required.
STAR 2+ Additional Options
- STAR 2+ skaters may also register to skate on any open session, including two morning options and/or a Saturday session.
- Open sessions do not include group lessons.
- Skaters will be required take private or semi‑private lessons (paid directly to coaches).
- Private lesson rates range from $12–$14 per 15 minutes.
- Star 2+ level skaters progress to linking their skating elements and skills into a program choreographed to music.
- New program choreography typically requires 1–2 hours of private lesson time. Coaches will make arrangements directly with the parents/guardians regarding lesson times for program choreography.
STAR 1–3 Assessments
- STAR assessments are Skate Canada’s national skill‑development benchmarks. They allow skaters to demonstrate progression of specific elements—such as edges, turns, spins, jumps, dance patterns, and performance quality—in a low‑pressure, supportive environment.
- Assessments are completed during regular skating sessions and not at separate events, which helps skaters feel comfortable and confident.
- Coaches will communicate to the parent/guardian when a skater is ready for an assessment
- There is an assessment fee of $18. Assessment fees (Skate Canada + club) are paid through Uplifter under Purchase Products.
- When a skater successfully completes an assessment, it is recorded in their Skate Canada profile and becomes part of their long‑term skating pathway.

Sessions are held at the Canada Games Centre. Payment plan of four installments is available in our registration system if you opt to pay with a credit card. Please refer to attached schedule for ice times and known cancellations/changes.
Skate Canada Membership Fee
All skaters must hold a valid Skate Canada membership.
- Annual fee: $65
- Covers: September 2026 – August 2027
- Non‑refundable
- Added automatically at checkout.
Pre-Season Ice
Get a head start with Pre-Season Ice before Labour Day.
- Available for Star 1-3 skaters. It consists of three days of ice per week from August 24 to September 3, 2026.
- See attached schedule for more information.
- Sessions fees are by the week and registration is online through Uplifter.
- Sessions will include 30 minutes of group lesson time and 30 minutes of practice time.
- If your skater does not want to skate all three days, there is a drop-in option by clicking on the week and choosing the days your skater would like to skate. Summer buy-on rates are $25 per day.
Special Events
Fall Seminar – September 18-20, 2026:
Open to all STAR 1-3 skaters. The seminar will be held the weekend of September 18-20, 2026 with special guest coaches Kelly-Lyn Champagne and Janet Lau from the Connaught Skating Club. It is a great opportunity to kick off the season and learn new skills or technique from high level coaches who coach at one of the best clubs in BC. Skaters will skate one or two sessions per day over the weekend which will include some off-ice training as well.
The schedule will be provided approximately one week before the seminar. For planning purposes sessions will be held on Friday from 3:45 pm to 7 pm, Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and Sunday between 7:45 am and 1:30 pm. The fee is $100 for the weekend. Registration is online and opens August 1, 2026.
About the Coaches:
Kelly Champagne started skating at the age of 7 in Gatineau, Québec. At the age of 19, she started coaching in Gatineau, and in Montreal in the summers. When she was 28 years old, she moved to Vancouver and continued her coaching career. Since then, Kelly has coached at several clubs in the lower mainland and most recently at the Connaught Skating Club. She has 36 years of coaching experience and she also works with various international skaters and coaches.
Janet Lau began skating at the age of 2 1/2 years old. Janet trained at Burnaby 8 Rinks and became a national competitor at the age of 10. During her competitive career, she won first place at the BC/YT Sectional Championships in Junior Women. After her skating career, she branched her interests in dance (hip hop) and coaching.

Other Events to Watch For
Competition opportunities, off-ice classes, simulations as well as other special events are available throughout the year. Additional club and coaching fees may apply to these events. Registration for these activities will be announced throughout the year. Current known events to take note:

Team Wear Jacket Orders
Arctic Edge Skating Club team jackets are available for purchase by going to Purchase Products on our registration page. The Elite Expressions jackets (See website https://www.elitexpression.com/) have a cell phone pocket and thumb slit and are made with brushed fabric (for added warmth). Photos and the sizing chart are available on the website.

Volunteer Requirements
Parents and guardians play a vital role in supporting club operations. Volunteer involvement in the activities of the club also increases the overall understanding of the club’s operations and the needs/expectations of each skater. Volunteer credits are established by the Board of Directors and reviewed each year to ensure there is adequate support for the planned activities.
For STAR 1–3 families:
- Minimum 6 volunteer credits required (September–May).
- Volunteer tasks are selected during registration in Uplifter.
- Additional opportunities will be shared throughout the year.
Important:
- Fundraising participation (e.g., Purdy’s, raffle tickets) does not count as volunteer credit.
- Families may opt out of volunteering by paying a $200 fee at registration (via subscription icon).
